Scans Fueling Debate

There are some interesting ideas and debates involving 3D scanning and antiquities. Several of the models in this project are scans from museums, galleries and collections. Some museums, such as the Smithsonian, release a few of their scans to the public, but there’s a debate over why they don’t release more considering that many of these museums are publicly funded. Another interesting project involves the destruction of heritage sites by ISIS. #NEWPALMYRA is a digital archeology project where artifacts and places that have been destroyed are being reconstructed digitally. An additional debate being fueled by 3D scanning surrounds the theft of archeological artifacts, their display in national museums and whether they should be returned to their country of origin. The Nefertiti scan we used was released by a pair of artists attempting to bring attention to this practice, although there’s doubt that the model released is actually a result of their project.

Practical Elements

Throughout the award show package, we integrated photographic elements to help anchor the CGI to reality. Other times we used the photographic elements as reference for modeling and texturing.
